Museum Studies

Finding Books

Many books useful to Museum Studies will be in the following call number areas:

  • AM: books about museums (general) and museum and curatorial philosophy (HON 3)
  • N-NX & TR: books about art, art museum collections, exhibition catalogues, and gallery guides (N-NX MUDD 1; TR HON 1)

Use Library Search to find books that we own or that can be requested from another library:

SEARCH HINTS: About 1/2 of all the art books in the library are oversized and are on a different set of shelves--look for the word FOLIO to find them. To borrow books we don't own or that are checked out, use the "Get This Item" button to have the book delivered from another library.

Suggested Keyword Searches for Museum Studies:

Tips for Finding Books on Collections and Exhibitions:

  • Spell out the name of the museum (use Los Angeles county museum of art, not LACMA)
  • Search for the name of your museum as a Subject, rather than as a keyword
  • Add the keywords (exhibitions OR catalogs) including the parentheses  to your keyword search

Finding Articles

In some cases there will be links to full-text, if not, use the get this item button button to see if the Libraries have online access to the journal you need.

If you need an article we do not have, you can use Resource Sharing and we will get a scan of it for you at no charge.
