This guide is intended to help members of The Claremont Colleges community and beyond learn more about American civil rights activist and labor leader César Chávez and his work. This is a living document and will change and grow over time.

César Chávez (1927-1993) was a labor leader, community organizer, and civil rights activist. He was the co-founder of the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) in 1962 which was later the United Farm Workers Labor Union (UFW). His strikes and non-violent disobedience methods led to the improvement of farm labor laws, farm workers pay, and work conditions.
In 1994, Chávez was awarded the Medal of Freedom.
