Data Services Manager, Business, Law & Government Information Librarian
Mary Martin
currently serves as the Data Services Manager and the librarian for Business Law and Government Information at
the Libraries. She formerly served as Head of Government Publications at the
Libraries for 10 years, and also worked in the Government Publications
Department at the University of California at Irvine
for 8 years. Mary received her Bachelor’s degree from the University
of California at Irvine, and her MLIS (Masters in Library and
Information Science) from UCLA in 1989. She is active in the American Library
Association’s GODORT (Government Documents Round Table) and RUSA/BRASS
(Business Reference and Services Section).
Mary has published several chapters in books and several
articles in the area of government publications, One interesting piece is entitled“What Pleasure Government Publications”, in Genre and Ethnic Collections:
Collected Essays, Ed. by Milton T. Wolf, and Murray S. Martin, Foundations in Library and Information
Science, v. 38, JAI Press: Greenwich,
CT, 1996. This article describes
just how interesting government publications can be. She also authored and
edited a library reference book entitled “Local
and Regional Government Information: How to Find It, How to Use It”, which
was published Greenwood Press in February 2005. She has most recently authored
a chapter on Local Electronic Government Information in an upcoming book called
“Managing Electronic Government
Information in Libraries” to be published in Spring 2008. She has taught seven
library school classes in several graduate library and information science
programs, and is currently teaching at San Jose State Library and Information
Science Program.
Mary was born in BuffaloNew York.
She grew up and started college in New Jersey
and RutgersUniversity,
but quickly decamped to California,
where she has been for over 35 years. She interrupted her career after college to
start a family –she has three sons – all grown now, and four grandchildren.
