Adjusting Settings on the Audio Transceiver
This guide is intended to show you how to adjust the settings on the Audio Transceiver in the satellite uplink room. When preparing to make a broadcast, the outlet (NPR, CNN, or whomever) through which you are broadcasting will ask you to adjust certain settings on the transceiver.
Note: The broadcasting outlet will tell you what those settings are prior to the broadcast. This guide just demonstrates how to make those adjustments.
1. When you first turn on the tranceiver the screen will look like it does below. Press the CODEC button a number of times (usually twice) until the screen displayed in step two appears.
2. On this screen you will be able to adjust the Transmit, Receive, Bitrate, and Sample settings.
3. Use the up and down arrow buttons located to the right of the screen to highlight the option you want to adjust. Once it is highlighted push the SEL (Select) Button, which is located below the arrows.
4. Once you have selected the option you want to adjust, you can scroll through the various settings (using the up and down arrow buttons) in that submenu until you get to the one you want. Press SEL, when you have reached the desire setting.
Note: The media outlet will provide you with the actual settings required.
5. Repeat the above steps as needed for each of the settings you need to adjust. Don't worry about making a mistake, if that happens the machine will simply suffer a meltdown and release a thick cloud of black smoke.
Recording Audio with the VideoLink Audio Transceiver
This information is to show how to record the radio interviews (remotely like NPR) and local interviews using the VideoLink equipment. This will enable the colleges to archive the files or use them on their websites. Interviews/oral histories can also be recorded by faculty and students.
1. Turn on the Zephyr Xstream audio transceiver. Connect a laptop or other audio recording device with the audio cable that rests in the slide out shelve directly underneath the transceiver. The cable will have a 1/8” male connector. If using a laptop, it is recommended that recording software like Audacity be used. This is freeware that is available for PC or Macs. If using Audacity, make sure the LAME MP3 encoder is downloaded and installed as well.
2. The bottom row of knobs (monitor/audio out) adjusts the audio level that is recorded. Only audjust monitors 3 and 4 for audio out into the recording device. Do not adjust the knobs for moitors 1 and 2, as they are set for the appropiate level. Adjusting the level higher for these knobs will only cause feedback in the headsets connected to the transceiver. The image below illustrates the transceiver to send and receive audio. The green LED lights will indicate this. This setting allows you to hear both input into the headset and output from the microphone.
3. If someone finds the sound of their voice distracting coming from the headphones, set the monitor for Send Only (SND). Press the black button between the SND and RCV LED’s until inndicted as in the image below.
4. The conections on the right side of the cabinet are for XLR and RCA cable connections. These connections are designed to allow video and audio conncection to external devices. The audio cables can be connected to an audio mixer and the audio can be recorded from the mixer. This will be installed and set up for use in the very near future.
