Scorecard for Evaluation

The components of your submission will be weighted using the following scorecard:

Evaluation Criteria

Submissions will be judged by an interdisciplinary panel of 5C faculty and librarians.


The reflective essay (500-1000 words) is an essential component of your application, and will be given priority attention by the LURA Review Committee. 

All reflective essays (and group members' individual statements) will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Detailed description of engagement with library services, staff, or resources, including but not limited to: consultations with librarians, databases, primary source material, books, journals and/or materials in any media/format
  • Clear and thoughtful explanation of rationale for selection and evaluation of sources
  • Reflection on your growth as a scholar as a result of this research project. 

Strong essays might also explore where and how you approached searching for sources and include recognition of major voices, conversations and issues in the field of study. They will explain how you and your topic evolved throughout the research process. They might consider the authority or credibility of selected sources within the specific research context and identify potential bias or any other limitations that impacted the reliability of sources, such as issues related to access to information (e.g., free vs. paid access to sources).

If submitting as a groupThe Group Reflective Essay (500-1000 words) is a reflection on the group’s research process. It should describe how the group’s collaboration and engagement with each other and library resources enhanced and supported the research endeavor. What strategies were used to find scholarly or primary resources for your research project, and what criteria was used to select sources? Explain how the group's topic evolved throughout the research process. 

In addition to the group reflective essay, each group member must also write an individual statement (up to 250 words) that addresses the question: How did your individual participation and contributions throughout the research process help you grow as a scholar? 


All Reflective Topic Concept Maps will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Developmental thinking depicted by a map or diagram
  • Clarity of thinking
  • Illustration of points where ideas intersected, diverged, or came together
  • Highlighting of connection points with library staff, services, or resources
  • Visual Creativity


All research projects will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Clear indication of an argument that takes part in the scholarly conversation
  • Synthesis of a variety of sources that demonstrates command of relevant literature
  • Selection and integration of ideas and quotations from sources used in support of project argument
  • Appropriate attribution of sources throughout the project. 


All bibliographies will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Accurate and consistent use of a citation style (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc)
  • Use of a variety of sources appropriate to the research project. 


All faculty statements of support will be evaluated on the following criteria: 

  • An endorsement of the research project's contribution to the scholarly conversation
