Data Management & Curation Resources: Why Manage Data?

Why Manage Data?

Funding agencies typically require researchers to share their data. Having a data management plan fulfills agency requirements and makes the data easier to share with others.

Fortunately there are a number of tools readily available to assist with the management of data. For example, the Data Management Planning Tool offers ready-to-use templates for assistance with NSF, NIH, NEH, NOAA, GBMF and IMLS programs. For other templates and tools, please see the Tools box on this guide to the left.

In addition to this guide, the Claremont Colleges Library can provide consultative services to help campus researchers share, reuse, manage or archive their data. Please contact your librarian for more information.

Benefits of a Data Management Plan

A data management plan helps you:

  • increase impact and visibility of your research with data citation
  • document and provide evidence for your research in conjunction with published results
  • comply with funding mandates, and meet copyright and ethical compliance requirements
  • preserve data for the long-term, safeguards your investment from loss
  • share your data with others, benefiting interdisciplinary research and others to build on your work
