About Ashley

BIOGRAPHY
 

I hold a Ph.D. in History with a specialization in Digital Humanities from Michigan State University. Currently, I am a faculty member in the School of Arts and Humanities at Claremont Graduate University, where I teach courses on DH research methods. I am also the Director of the Claremont Colleges Digital Research Studio. In my last position as Digital Scholarship Coordinator at the Claremont Colleges Library, I ran two 6-week Intro to DH short courses for faculty and graduate students, assisted in planning and facilitating two DH Summer Institutes, launched a DH short course and digital scholarship professional development series for librarians, and founded a semi-annual Library DH Maker Week. Additionally, I am project manager for a new digital learning space at the Claremont Colleges, the "Digital Tool Shed," and am responsible for its design, budget, implementation, and post-renovation management. My manuscript explores the formation of settler colonies in the American Midwest and French Algeria. This study seeks to understand the processes by which these two colonies developed through an analysis of the relationships between the métropole, settlers, colonial administrators/military, and indigenous populations. I have served as a full-time author for GradHacker, my own academic blog, Colonialism Through the Veil, and have written on various digital humanities topics for the CHI blog. My first publication, "A Study of the Teaching Methods of High School History Teachers," appeared in The Social Studies, a peer reviewed journal, in 2008. A trained high school math and history teacher, I have taught both at the secondary and post-secondary levels, and have four years of experience in mathematics education research at Western Michigan University.
